"Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce. Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare" (Jeremiah 29:4-7).
As God's people in the Old Testament were exiles in Babylon, they were commanded by God to seek the welfare of the city, and as a consequence things would go good for them as well.
When we cross over into the New Testament, we the church are spiritual foreigners on this earth commanded by God to be witnesses of Jesus by living and doing good (1 Peter 2:11). A part of doing good is for us to seek the welfare of the cities in which God allows us to live.
A way to do that in our country here in America is for us to participate in our democratic process of electing people who will serve in governing positions, not just on the federal or state levels, but on the local level as well (School Board Trustees, Mayor, City Council Members).
It is election season here in Desoto, TX. Candidates, voting locations, and other pertinent information can be found at desototexas.gov/generalelection.
If you live in Desoto, be sure to exercise your right to vote for the good of our city to the glory of our God.
